With the boom of global infrastructure export and large-scale engineering construction in Saudi Arabia, building scaffolding steel plank and hot-dip galvanized steel plank are essential load-bearing and anti-slip materials for high-altitude construction. Their environmental adaptability, service life, wear resistance and aging resistance directly determine construction safety and project costs. The climate conditions of different regions cause completely different damage degrees to construction steel footboard and scaffolding platform footboard. This special field test conducts a comprehensive comparison between steel planks for Saudi desert construction sites and steel planks for temperate inland construction sites, deeply analyzing two core damage factors of high-temperature aging and wind-sand abrasion, so as to provide professional measured references for overseas engineering procurement and foreign trade building material selection in the Middle East.

As the core infrastructure hub of the Middle East, Saudi Arabia hosts various new urban construction, petrochemical, municipal road and bridge, and high-rise building projects under extreme desert working conditions, featuring extreme high temperature, strong wind and sand, intense ultraviolet rays and huge day-night temperature differences. On-site measured data shows that the extreme surface temperature of desert construction sites can exceed 75℃ in summer. Long-term strong ultraviolet radiation combined with continuous wind-sand impact causes severe damage to galvanized scaffolding plank and anti-slip punched steel plank. Compared with temperate inland construction sites with mild four seasons, less wind and sand and small temperature differences, the high-temperature aging speed of steel planks in Saudi desert environments is increased by 2.8–3.3 times, and the surface wind-sand abrasion speed is increased by 3.6–4.2 times.

Ordinary national standard scaffolding steel footboard and movable scaffolding plank can be used normally for 3–5 years in temperate inland working conditions. However, when directly applied to Saudi desert construction sites, they are prone to galvanized layer pulverization and falling off, plate corrosion and perforation, worn anti-slip patterns and plate deformation and warping. These problems not only greatly shorten the turnover life of construction working footboard, but also cause potential safety hazards such as high-altitude slipping and insufficient bearing capacity, increasing project replacement costs and shutdown losses. In addition, desert saline-alkali dust will accelerate the electrochemical corrosion of export steel plank, which is a severe damage problem that does not exist in inland working conditions.

Customized Saudi special steel plank and desert wear-resistant steel plank for extreme Middle East working conditions adopt upgraded technologies including thickened hot-dip galvanizing process, high-density anti-slip punching, fully sealed edge reinforcement and high-strength carbon steel substrate. It perfectly adapts to multiple harsh desert environments including high temperature, wind and sand, ultraviolet rays and saline-alkali corrosion. The product effectively solves the pain points of high-altitude operation steel plank such as easy aging, wear, rust and deformation. It is a preferred product among special building materials for Middle East infrastructure and foreign trade export scaffolding accessories, widely suitable for various overseas projects such as Saudi NEOM New City, Red Sea projects, oil and gas factories, municipal roads and high-rise buildings.
